New Issue of AC Celebrates Daviau’s Life and Artistry
In this special commemorative issue, the cinematographer’s colleagues reflect on his lasting impact on the art and craft of filmmaking.
The upcoming October/November 2020 issue of American Cinematographer features a focus on the lasting legacies of an ASC legend and a renowned ASC associate; cinematographers who have traveled the globe and shared their knowledge with members of local communities; ASC members who also direct; a retrospective on AC’s coverage of the 2000s; and an extended look at new products with a special focus on lighting.
A Tribute to the Career and Legacy of Allen Daviau, ASC
AC looks back at the influential career of five-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer, whose credits include E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Empire of the Sun, The Color Purple, Bugsy and Avalon, and who was honored with the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Chronicle Documents Current State of Covid-19
Ellen Kuras, ASC discusses her project Chronicle, a “cinematic portrait” currently in progress that explores the Covid-19 pandemic as experienced by people throughout the world. The article also offers examples of how ASC members have a long history of mentoring students and emerging artists, travelling internationally and to share their knowledge of cinematography with those who wouldn’t otherwise have an opportunity to interact with the industry’s top practitioners.
Directing and Visual Storytelling
ASC members who also direct — Michael Goi, Ernest Dickerson and Dana Gonzales — discuss their experiences in working on this other side of the camera, a practice that was established with the very founding of the Society.

Remembering Denny Clairmont
A tribute to ASC associate member and founder of Clairmont Camera, for his contributions to the advancement of filmmaking. Clairmont was the recipient of the John A. Bonner Medal of Commendation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2011, as well as the ASC Bud Stone Award of Distinction in 2015.
